Photocatalytic discoloration of the azo dye methylene blue in the presence of irradiated TiO2/Pt nano-composite

An efficient photocatalytic material TiO2/Pt was prepared via the sonochemical synthesis followed by the thermal treatment. The TiO2/Pt nanocomposite was able to photocatalytically degrade the azo dye methylene blue (MB) under UV (ultraviolet) and Vis (visible) irradiation. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of Pt/TiO2 for methylene blue degradation is attributed to the following factors; to the presence of Pt particles which store photogenerated electron thus contribute to an efficient charge carrier’s separation and to the adsorption of the dye on the surface of the composite, which acts as a photosensitizer.
